civil design experience

2007-2008 Marcin Engineering LLC, Avon, CO, USA

  • Responsible for compilation of several drainage reports for large urban and peri-urban redevelopment projects in Eagle County, Colorado

2004-2006 Ross-shire Black and Veatch then SWAZ Ltd, Muir of Ord, Highland, Scotland

  • Conducted hydraulic studies of existing sewerage, water reticulation, raw intakes and pumping networks serving villages and towns throughout the remote Highlands of Scotland.
  • Performed structural inspections (internal and external) of aging concrete water reservoirs, remedial design.
  • Designed surfaced and unsurfaced access roads, tanker turning areas, pedestrian access, kerbing and fencing to ensure safe operation of water and sewerage assets.

2002-2004 Black and Veatch, Chester, Cheshire, England

  • Supervised design and personally trainined engineers designing combined sewage outfalls for Welsh Water.
  • Designed ultra-sonic gauging stations for 7 river sites throughout North-East England, including flow control and bank protection for the Environment Agency.
  • Completed miscellaneous structural design of various elements within different water treatment works.

1996-2001 Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick then EiTA, Engineering and Technical Assistance, Gaborone, Botswana

  • Compiled hydraulic model (Colebrook White method) for large sewerage network (9000+ connections) for an accelerated land servicing project. Produced detailed design and final contract documents. Challenges included huge variations in base flow rates over expected life of project in very flat terrain.
  • Used developed model on another project as freelance designer for Dorsch Consult, including detailed design, final contract docs and all construction drawings using AutoCAD personally.
  • Conducted various smaller studies for water and sanitation projects throughout Botswana, designed improvements or new build projects as required. Clients included EEC and US Dept of State.
  • Led small team of engineers working directly with community to plan and phase roads and other service improvements to local villages.

1994-1996 Burrow Binnie Botswana (Black and Veatch), Gaborone, Botswana

  • Developed time saving system to semi-automate 225miles of long section design for 3-4foot diameter raw water pipeline. Using spreadsheets, LISP and AutoCAD; Surveyor's field data and Site Investigation results used directly to produce plans and long sections; and to provide accurate pipe, earthworks and rock quantities for tender documents for the World Bank sponsored North South Carrier project.
  • Coordinated alternative route selection with environmental consultants on the project, considering all land acquisition, socio-economic effects and engineering implications.
  • Supervised AutoCAD drawing production for some 280 long sections and 70 other detailed drawings by staff.
  • Produced tender documents for Pipe Supply and Pipe Laying Contracts using FIDIC.
  • Completed conceptual, hydraulic and structural design of 3 break pressure tanks to BS8007 and BS8110.

1993-1994 Burrow Binnie Swaziland (Black and Veatch), Mbabane, Swaziland

  • Designed small bore sewer network for 300plot township and 2miles of relief sewer main, produced bills, specification and tender documents for World Bank sponsored Swaziland Urban & Industrial Development Project. Challenges included steep terrain and densely populated areas.
  • Re-designed treatment process at large sewer treatment plant, fitting new anaerobic pond and associated pipework into existing confined hill-side site. Produced tender documents.
  • Conducted fieldwork, conceptual design, socio-economic analyses and cost-benefit analysis for several reticulation and treatment projects.

1991-1993 Brown and Root / Howard Humphreys & Partners, Leatherhead, Surrey, England

  • Performed slope stability analysis; consolidation analysis; and remedial geotechnical design of 230foot high earth embankment dam in Kenya.
  • Reviewed, updated and analyzed existing hydraulic models; built new models where required.
  • Developed steel and concrete designs for associated structures; analysis of drainage systems and contract preparation, supervision and site supervision of a 230foot deep observation borehole on a sensitive London site.
  • Assisted with preparation of various bids - particularly in French speaking countries.
